Thrive with Work From Home Parents
The New Normal
With many corporate offices opting for extended work-from-home policies, many nannies have found themselves juggling the dynamic between kiddos and parents. While some nannies and families have figured out the delicate balance, a lot of caregivers and families are struggling to define the new normal. Here are some quick tips to help your team thrive.
Keep Open Lines of Communication
Create a weekly or monthly check-in. If there isn’t a distraction-free time during the day, schedule a Zoom call when the kids are asleep. Use this time to go over any concerns or questions that have popped up and make sure everyone feels supported during this time, especially the kids.
Determine Who’s Directing Traffic
Make sure everyone is on the same page about who’s calling the shots during work hours. This question will help alleviate confusion for both adults and kids. If parents are working and unable to step-in, autonomy should be given to the nanny. Keep these guidelines consistent to avoid confusion. A go-to phrase for parents can be “What did Nanny say?” Use your weekly check-ins away from the kids to discuss alternatives or redirection, as doing this in the moment will further confuse children and leave all grownups and kiddos frustrated.
Off-Limits Work Spaces
Clearly designated areas will help when parents need uninterrupted work time. Some nannies have found great success in using a red “stop” or green “go” sign on the office door to help kids visualize boundaries.
Keep in Mind
Keep in mind this is hard for everyone, but if you can work together as a team and build a solid foundation of trust and understanding, having extra grownups in the house can be helpful and downright fun! Make sure to approach each conversation in a professional, positive way. We are all struggling to figure out what works at this time. Be patient and open. We got this!
