Virtual Nanny Interview Tips
Congratulations
You’ve scheduled your first interview with a family! But how do you put your best foot forward especially now that most first nanny interviews are virtual? Here are some tips on how to ensure a great connection.
Professional Setting
Treat a virtual interview as you would an in-person meeting. Dress professionally and don’t forget to check your background setting. Remove clutter from the camera’s view. Try a blank wall as your background to make sure the focus is on you, not the pile of laundry you’ve been chipping away at.
Introductions
Prepare for the inevitable icebreaker question, “tell me a little bit about yourself.” Practice a quick description of where you grew up, went to school and some favorite hobbies. This is also a great time to refer to the family’s job description. Mention that you love soccer and noticed their children do too. Finding common ground is a great way to establish a connection.
Say Hi to the Kids
It’s important to interact with the children if they’re present. This includes introducing yourself to them in a kid-friendly way. Offer to read a book or simply ask them what they’re into. Kids love to share their favorite characters and games – give them the opportunity to shine!
Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Some of my favorite questions include “What do you need from a caregiver to help make your day-to-day easier” and “What are your childcare goals?” A broad range of questions (involving both the family as a whole and specific childcare questions) will let the family know you’re serious about the role and invested in their well-being.
Be Yourself
Don’t forget to smile, relax, and show your personality! Interviewing doesn’t have to be dry. Families are looking for a genuine connection. Tell them about your caregiving style, things that you enjoy doing with nanny kids, and what you can bring to the table. This is your moment to divulge your status as a gold medal cartwheel champion!
Thank You’s
Lastly, make sure to thank them for their time, and let them know it was wonderful chatting. Ending on a happy note helps to land a positive impression.
